Herbicide Tolerant Soybean Traits

June 1, 2021

Soybean traits have become more complex, having multiple herbicide tolerances in a single trait. Good record keeping on what seed is planted where is highly encouraged if planting multiple traits because, the traits are not interchangeable. Misapplication over-the-top of the wrong trait could result in complete plant mortality and warrant replanting. The most widely used herbicide tolerant soybean traits on the market: Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® (RR2X), XtendFlex® (XF), Enlist E3® (E3) soybeans and LibertyLink® GT27™ (LLGT27).

Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® (RR2X)
Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans are tolerant to preemergence and postemergence applications of glyphosate and dicamba. Dicamba applications should be an approved formulation like Xtendimax® Herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, Engenia® Herbicide and Tavium® Plus VaporGrip® Technology. The approved formulations are lower volatility formulations compared to previous dicamba formulations.

XtendFlex® (XF)
XtendFlex® soybeans are built on the premise of the RR2X trait, however, the addition of glufosinate tolerance adds flexibility for multiple postemergence options for tough-to-control broadleaf weeds. Dicamba applications should be an approved formulation like Xtendimax® Herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, Engenia® Herbicide and Tavium® Plus VaporGrip® Technology. Currently, tank mixes of an approved dicamba and glufosinate are prohibited.

Enlist E3®
Enlist E3® platform confers tolerance to preemergence and postemergence applications of glyphosate, glufosinate and 2,4-D. For postemergence applications of 2,4-D on Enlist E3® soybeans, use either Enlist One™ with Colex-D® Technology or Enlist Duo® with Colex-D® technology. Enlist One™ and Enlist Duo® formulations contain a reduced volatility formulation, 2,4-D-choline, compared to older ester and amine 2,4-D formulations.

LibertyLink® GT27™ (LLGT27)
The LibertyLink® GT27™ trait platform is tolerant to glufosinate and glyphosate postemergence and an HPPD inhibitor, Isoxaflutole, preemergence only. The only labeled isoxaflutole containing product for LLGT27 soybeans is Alite™ 27. Be sure to check the label to determine if Alite™ 27 is labeled in your state.

Having multiple herbicide tolerances in a single trait adds complexity to soybean production, but the traits help combat herbicide resistant weeds like waterhemp and marestail. Good record keeping on what seed is planted where is highly encouraged if planting multiple traits because, the traits are not interchangeable. Misapplication over-the-top of the wrong trait could result in complete plant mortality and warrant replanting. For questions about traited soybeans, contact your local FS Crop Specialist.

*This does not replace an herbicide label, please check tank mix websites prior to tank mixing
1 Approved dicamba can be applied burndown, preemergence and postemergence in Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® and XtendFlex® soybeans.
2 Enlist One™ and Enlist DUO® (2,4-D choline) can be applied burndown, preemergence and postemergence in Enlist E3® soybeans
3Alite™27 can only be applied preemergence in LibertyLink® GT27™ soybeans; check the label for approval in your state.
